STAGE 5: COLLECTING TEXTURES

Red Star’s artists visited the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet in Sheffield to collect images as both reference and for use as texture maps to detail the 3D models. These texture maps would provide surface detail for the models, including bricks, tiles, slate and dirt floors and innumerable close up details.

The images were recorded using an ordinary digital camera, taking advantage of a dull overcast day so there would be no strong lighting or harsh shadows in them. Although every attempt was made to record them as flat and “straight-on” as possible, some manipulation in the computer was required to render them as a flat pattern, like a roll of wallpaper, to be used as textures.
