Artist, professor of history painting of St Petersburg Academy of Arts, rector of the Academy from 1855 until 1871. During the 1860s he published two articles in the periodical press (Sanktpeterburgskie vedomosti, 1861, no. 258; Birzhevye vedomosti, 1865, no. 257, translated below) in response to the attacks on the Academy by radical critics, particularly Vladimir Stasov.
