Landscape and the Arts in Imperial Russia

Cambridge Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH), 9-11 September 2004.

Held with the support of CRASSH, the Royal Academy and the National Gallery, London.

This conference aimed to expose, question and debate the complex and challenging contribution which landscape has made to the Russian arts. With this brief in mind, seventeen speakers from Britain, Holland, Russia and the United States addressed the physical and intellectual construction of landscape in Russian culture from a variety of perspectives, their methodologies encompassing visual analysis, literary associations, scientific and geographic considerations, and ethnographic research. The final day of the conference was held in conjunction with the National Gallery’s exhibition 'Russian Landscape in the Age of Tolstoy', creating the first occasion for a group of scholars outside Russia to consider the discourses surrounding Russian landscape in front of the paintings themselves.

For further information please contact the convenor, Dr Rosalind Polly Blakesley, Pembroke College, Cambridge, rpg27@cam.ac.uk.
