Wrote criticism in a range of areas, including art, music, and literature. Initially a moderate liberal, Botkin associated with Westernizers and travelled widely throughout Europe. After 1855 his aesthetic views became increasingly conservative and he began to advocate the doctrine of 'art for art's sake'.
