Lyric poet, essayist, and participant in the 'Arzamas' literary group, in which such eminent intellectual figures as and Aleksandr Pushkin, P.A. Viazemskii, I.I. Dmitriev 1760-1837), N.M. Karamzin, S.S. Uvarov, and V.A. Zhukovskii also participated. With Zhukovskii, Batiushkov was considered to be the founder of a new poetic movement.
