Stasov in his article entitled 'Nishchie dukhom' ('The Destitute of Spirit') published in Novosti i birzhevaia gazeta (News and Stock-Exchange Newspaper) denounces the journal World of Art and accuses it of decadence and slavish imitation of debased Western art. He ends the article by declaring 'uncompromising war by any healthy person, not yet corrupt in mind, on this useless decadence !'
