New Statute of the Academy of Arts enacted, according to which: the Assembly (sobranie) of the Academy was established; the system of class instruction was substituted by studios, and; considerable freedom was granted to students as to the choice of subjects for their works. The Assembly incorporated members of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions, such as Antokol'skii, Viktor Vasnetsov, Kuindzhi, Vladimir Makovskii, Polenov, Repin, Surikov, and Shishkin. Teaching positions at the Academy's High College of Art (Vysshee khudozhestvennoe uchilishche) were given to Makovskii, Kuindzhi, Repin, and Shishkin.
