January. Ivan Shishkin opens his individual exhibition at the Academy. His decision to exhibit at the Academy rather than at the 21st exhibition of the Peredvizhniki was one of the signs of the crisis in the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions of which he was a founding member. Pressure from his fellow associates probably forced Shishkin eventually to exhibit three works at the Peredvizhniki exhibition after it moved to Moscow.
