Individual exhibition of Vasilii Vereshchagin - the first ever major exhibition of a Russian artist in the USA - opened in New York where it attracted significant press coverage. The exhibition subsequently travelled to Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, St. Louis and other cities. One hundred and ten works, including works from the Indian and Balkan series were subsequently sold at auction in New York in 1891.
