Individual exhibition of Vasilii Vereshchagin in Vienna. His works on religious subjects painted in a naturalistic manner, such as Sviatoe semeistvo (The Holy Family) and Voskresenie (The Resurrection), created a sensation and infuriated the Catholic clergy. Vereshchagin entered discussions in the press by publishing articles in which he challenged the traditional way of depicting the Holy Family and contrasted the texts of the Gospels with the doctrines of the Church.
