The Academy of Arts begins to publish the journal Vestnik iziashchnykh iskusstv (The Messenger of Fine Arts) and its appendix Khudozhestvennye novosti (Art News). Edited by Andrei Somov, art historian, art critic and curator in the Hermitage, these publications were aimed at becoming 'the organ of all Russian art' thereby bridging the gap between the Academy and the Peredvizhniki. Both publications exhisted until 1890.
