The exhibition of Vereshchagin's Balkan and Indian Series in St Petersburg. The press hotly debated the extent to which the paintings, particularly those on the subjects of the Russo-Turkish war, were truthful and 'patriotic'. Explanatory texts to the pictures were removed from the exhibition by the authorities, along with the painting entitled Si jeune et déjà décoré (Adjutant) which satirised young aristocrats who received decorations without risking their lives in battle. 200,000 people visited the exhibition in 40 days.
