After Vereshchagin refused to follow Ivan Turgenev's advice to invite editors of Parisian newspapers to the opening of his exhibition, the writer himself wrote to several newspapers asking that the exhibition be announced and, in a letter to the editor of the newspaper Le XIX-e Siécle, highly recommended Vereshchagin to the Parisian public.
