Vereshchagin's paintings of both the Indian and Balkan series exhibited in Kensington Museum in London and subsequently in Paris. This was the first ever individual exhibition of a Russian artist in both Britain and France, and it enjoyed popular success and received much critical attention. As Stasov put it, it 'gave Russian painting the right of citizenship in the art world'.
