In an act of despair after official criticism of his works as unpatriotic Vereshchagin burned three paintings of his Turkestan series - Near the Wall of a Fortress. 'They Have Entered', Surrounded! They're Pursuing and The Forgotten Soldier. However, all the works had been recorded in photographs. A reproduction of The Forgotten Soldier, although banned in Russia until 1895, was subsequently used for the covers of several catalogues of Vereshchagin's exhibitions abroad, while the two other works were exhibited as photographs.
