Writer, poet, art critic and literary critic. He contributed articles on art to The Contemporary (Sovremennik) (from the end of the 1850s) and Notes of the Fatherland (Otechestvennye zapiski) from 1868 until 1873. He also published art criticism in Time (Vremia), The Messenger of Europe (Vestnik Evropy) and Russian Thought (Russkaia mysl'). His memoirs entitled Encounters on the Path of Life (Vstrechi na zhiznennom puti) are devoted to Aleksandr Ivanov and Ivan Kramskoi.
